Oil mists are composed by micro particles of coolant oil and micro-dusts suspended in the air. Dust, oil mists and aerosols, if unfiltered and purified, are dangerous to the health of all operators.

Micro-mists and micro-dusts suspended in the air
This type of atmospheric pollutant is mainly found in the mechanical and metal engineering industry, where work such as turning, milling, grinding, drawing, drilling, boring, shearing, cutting, threading, cold strain of metal materials are the primary source.
– Metal lubrication operations and the protection of pipes and profiles, rolls lubrication systems, semi-automatic spray – – and automatic spray – as well as systems for protection from oxidation of pipes.
– During the cleaning of pieces produced and machine tools by the air guns puffs.
The main causes of oil mists are due to the summation of these factors:
– evaporation of coolant oils – during the extrusion and metal removal, the tool or the cutter goes into contact with the piece to be worked creating first micro-dusts of removed material; later overheating causes the evaporation of coolants and the consequent formation of oil mists and aerosols composed mainly of air-suspended micro-mists.
– Oil atomization – caused both by the high number of spindle/wheel or cutter turns, and by the use of high-pressure pumps for coolant refrigeration during the working processes of machine tools.
The result of these elements physically breaks down the fluids into particles and micro-mist so thin, that they are volatile.
The problem of micro-mist not treated
The volatility of polluting particles such as micro-mists, micro-powders and aerosols, whether solid or liquid, entails and creates various problems for companies, operators and machine tools.
First of all, they negatively affect the health of the air and the health and hygiene conditions of the operators, in particular at the respiratory level, since the particles smaller than 0.3 microns can reach the pulmonary alveoli, compromising the respiratory tract. Not only that, in contact with the epidermis, they create skin irritations, dermatitis and redness.
Regarding the productivity, micro-dust and micro-mists pollution in the workshop considerably reduces the productivity of the plant and in particular the efficiency of the machine tools, since the stratification of pollutants invalidates the precision and tolerance of the measuring instruments, with the onerous consequence of having to increase maintenance on the most delicate components.
Dusts, oil mists and aerosols, not filtered and purified, make the floor slippery, dirty the surfaces of the machine tools and the walls of the shed, on which they settle.
Without forgetting any possible fines foreseen by current regulations, which impose a limit of concentration of oilymists in the workplace.
